About
Maine Political Data is a free, fully sourced record of how Maine votes: every city, town and plantation, every county and district, from statehood to today.
The project
Maine’s political record is scattered across state data files, printed canvass books, old registers and archive boxes. This site brings it together in one place: election results back to 1820, party enrollment back to 1954, Census figures for every community, campaign money for every race, and the history of the people who have held office. Every place has its own page, and every map can be explored town by town.
Every number comes from a public record, and every record is listed on the Data Sources page.
Maine Policy Institute
Maine Political Data is a project of the Maine Policy Institute, a nonpartisan organization that conducts research and analysis to educate the public, the media and lawmakers about public policy solutions in Maine. The site’s ratings, including the Partisan Electoral Alignment Index, were developed by MPI Chief Executive Officer Matthew Gagnon and are explained in full on the Methodology page.
Why we built it
- Open to everyone. Voters, reporters, candidates, students and lawmakers should be able to see how their community has voted, and how it has changed, without paying for it or hunting through archives.
- Accurate and transparent. We show our sources, explain our methods and correct mistakes when we find them.
- Facts, not spin. The site presents the record as it stands and leaves the conclusions to the reader.
