Constitutional Officers

Every Attorney General, Secretary of State and State Treasurer since statehood in 1820, and every State Auditor since the office began in 1907. In Maine the Legislature, not the voters, chooses all four.

About this page

Maine's Secretary of State, Attorney General and State Treasurer are elected by the Legislature, as is the State Auditor. This page lists everyone who has held each office since 1820, with party and years of service.

The lists follow the Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library's records of constitutional officers. See also the Legislature page for the party that controlled each election.
