Maine Election Results

Every Maine election from 1820 to 2026, mapped and tabulated by town, county, region and district wherever the returns allow.

Use the map to see any single election town by town (county by county where the old canvass printed only county totals), Swing to see where the ground shifted between two elections, and Results over time to follow one place across a century and a half. Every table row links back to the map.

Legislature

Seats won in each general election, by party

Maine House of Representatives · 151 seats

Maine Senate · 35 seats

Seats are counted from the general-election returns in this database: every winner in each district, including all members of multi-member districts. Before 1990 winners are as marked in the canvass or, where unmarked, derived from the votes; since 1990 they are the leading candidates on election night. Later vacancies, special elections and party switches are not reflected. The 1944–1950 canvasses print no party for legislative candidates (grey, “party not printed”). The Senate had 32 to 35 seats over the period; the 1984 House canvass on file covers 150 of 151 seats. Unenrolled candidates (and the rare winner from another minor party) are counted together as unenrolled; Green Independent and Libertarian seats are shown separately.

About this page

This page maps every Maine election in the database: general elections and primaries for President, Governor, U.S. Senate and House, the State Senate and House, county offices and district attorneys, and every statewide referendum and bond question. Choose a year and office to see the result by town, county, region or district, the swing from an earlier election, and the full candidate list.

Returns since 1990 come from the Maine Secretary of State's tabulations by municipality. Earlier returns were transcribed from the printed canvasses held by the Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library (1940–1989), the town returns printed in the Maine Register (1868–1928), the Secretary of State's tabulation books and, where nothing else survives for a Governor race before 1952, Michael J. Dubin's published county returns. Where a printed total disagrees with the town figures, the town figures are used. Open any town or county page for that place's full record, and see Data Sources for every source.
