The County is one of twelve Regions of Maine defined for this site. It has an estimated 66,609 residents (2025), compared with 67,105 in the 2020 Census.
It takes in 64 cities, towns and plantations, the largest Presque Isle, Caribou, Houlton, and Fort Kent.
In the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump carried the region with 62.3% to 36.3% for Kamala Harris. That was a Republican margin of 26 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Paul LePage carried the region with 57.7% to 40.5% for Janet Mills. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Angus King (Unenrolled) carried the region with 47.8% to 42.7% for Demi Kouzounas. On the Partisan Electoral Alignment Index (Partisan EAI), it ranks as the 2nd most Republican of 12 regions.
As of March 7, 2026, The County had 38,909 active registered voters: 25.5% Democrats, 40.2% Republicans, 30.1% unenrolled, and 3.7% Green Independents. The median household income is $56,855 and the median home value $149,682, against $74,733 and $296,600 statewide.
