Download the Data

Every table behind Maine Political Data, free to download and reuse: election results since 1820, voter registration since 1954, the partisan scores and the code that computes them, campaign finance, polls, absentee voting, Census figures, maps and the history of Maine’s offices.

Using These Files

Each section below is one dataset: download a single table, or everything in the section as one zip. Every file is the same version the site’s pages are built from, and each dataset’s README explains every column; its FLAGS file lists the known problems in the sources and what we did about each one.

Tables are UTF-8 CSV files with a header row; maps are GeoJSON in latitude and longitude. Places carry the same unit_id in every dataset, so election results, registration, absentee voting, valuation and the Census figures join on it. The largest tables come zipped. Where each figure comes from is set out on Data Sources.

Charts and maps

The site’s main charts and maps, and every town and district page, have a Share control: copy a link to the exact view, download it as an image, or copy the code to embed it in an article or website. Credit Maine Political Data with a link, as the license asks; the images and embeds already carry that credit.

What Is Not Here

  • The state voter file. The scores use town-by-party counts drawn from it; the file itself, with voters’ names, stays private.
  • Individual donors, lenders and payees. The campaign finance tables are totals. The itemized records are public at the Federal Election Commission (fec.gov) and the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.
  • Source documents. Scanned canvass books, newspaper pages and pollsters’ reports belong to the libraries, archives and firms that hold them; Data Sources says where each one is.
  • Survey data and pollster ratings. The Cooperative Election Study, AP VoteCast and published pollster ratings are available from their publishers.
