Downeast is one of twelve Regions of Maine defined for this site. It has an estimated 35,645 residents (2025), compared with 35,249 in the 2020 Census.
It takes in 54 cities, towns and plantations, the largest Calais, Machias, Franklin, and Milbridge.
In the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump carried the region with 61.1% to 37.4% for Kamala Harris. That was a Republican margin of 23.7 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Paul LePage carried the region with 55.5% to 40.9% for Janet Mills. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Demi Kouzounas carried the region with 47.8% to 41.8% for Angus King (Unenrolled). On the Partisan Electoral Alignment Index (Partisan EAI), it ranks as the 3rd most Republican of 12 regions.
As of March 7, 2026, Downeast had 23,024 active registered voters: 23.9% Democrats, 41.1% Republicans, 31.2% unenrolled, and 3.3% Green Independents. The median household income is $58,599 and the median home value $170,895, against $74,733 and $296,600 statewide.
