From an Abenaki name meaning "watching place for fish," for the salmon falls on the Kennebec. Set off from Canaan as Milburn, it returned to the old name Skowhegan in 1836.

It is part of Congressional District 2, State Senate District 3, State House District 70, and County Commissioner District 4, in the Central Maine region.

In the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump carried Skowhegan with 56% to 42.5% for Kamala Harris. That was a Republican margin of 13.5 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Paul LePage carried Skowhegan with 50.8% to 47.2% for Janet Mills.
