Augusta is a city in Kennebec County, Maine, incorporated in 1797 as Harrington, a city since 1849. It has an estimated 19,155 residents (2025), compared with 18,899 in the 2020 Census.
It is part of Congressional District 2, State Senate District 15, State House District 59 (50% of residents), State House District 60 (50% of residents), and County Commissioner District 1, in the Central Maine region.
In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris carried Augusta with 54% to 44.1% for Donald Trump. That was a Democratic margin of 9.9 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Janet Mills carried Augusta with 58.4% to 39.8% for Paul LePage. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Angus King (Unenrolled) carried Augusta with 54.3% to 32.3% for Demi Kouzounas. On the Partisan Electoral Alignment Index (Partisan EAI), it ranks as the 89th most Democratic of 504 towns.
