It is part of Congressional District 2, State Senate District 11, State House District 39, and County Commissioner District 1, in the Midcoast region.

In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris carried Belfast with 68% to 29.2% for Donald Trump. That was a Democratic margin of 38.8 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Janet Mills carried Belfast with 73% to 25.2% for Paul LePage. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Angus King (Unenrolled) carried Belfast with 62.8% to 20.7% for Demi Kouzounas. On the Partisan Electoral Alignment Index (Partisan EAI), it ranks as the 22nd most Democratic of 504 towns.
