Canaan is a town in Somerset County, Maine, incorporated in 1788. It has an estimated 2,219 residents (2025), compared with 2,193 in the 2020 Census.
It is part of Congressional District 2, State Senate District 3, State House District 69, and County Commissioner District 5, in the Central Maine region.
In the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump carried Canaan with 65.1% to 33% for Kamala Harris. That was a Republican margin of 32.1 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Paul LePage carried Canaan with 61.6% to 36.3% for Janet Mills. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Demi Kouzounas carried Canaan with 48.5% to 41.1% for Angus King (Unenrolled).
