Incorporated 1797Varney's 1886 gazetteer says the name honors Norway in Scandinavia. Before incorporation the township was called Rustfield, and residents had petitioned for the name Norage.

Norway is a town in Oxford County, Maine, incorporated in 1797. It has an estimated 5,349 residents (2025), compared with 5,077 in the 2020 Census.
It is part of Congressional District 2, State Senate District 18, State House District 81, and County Commissioner District 1, in the Western Maine region.
In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris carried Norway with 49.4% to 49.2% for Donald Trump. That was a Democratic margin of 0.2 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Janet Mills carried Norway with 54.3% to 43.4% for Paul LePage. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Angus King (Unenrolled) carried Norway with 53.7% to 34.4% for Demi Kouzounas. On the Partisan Electoral Alignment Index (Partisan EAI), it ranks as the 121st most Democratic of 504 towns.
