Named for the port on the Kennebunk River. Founded as Cape Porpus (Cape Porpoise), it was renamed Arundel and then Kennebunk Port in 1821.

It is part of Congressional District 1, State Senate District 34, State House District 134, and County Commissioner District 2, in the Southern Coast region.

In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris carried Kennebunkport with 63.8% to 34.8% for Donald Trump. That was a Democratic margin of 29 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Janet Mills carried Kennebunkport with 65.6% to 32.3% for Paul LePage.
