Once the north island of Vinalhaven. It was incorporated as Fox Isle, recalling the Fox Islands named by explorer Martin Pring in 1603, and renamed North Haven months later.

It is part of Congressional District 1, State Senate District 12, State House District 42, and County Commissioner District 3, in the Midcoast region.

In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris carried North Haven with 69.2% to 26.8% for Donald Trump. That was a Democratic margin of 42.4 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Janet Mills carried North Haven with 70.3% to 27.2% for Paul LePage. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Angus King (Unenrolled) carried North Haven with 65.4% to 16.8% for Demi Kouzounas.
