It is part of Congressional District 1, State Senate District 29, State House District 120 (35% of residents), State House District 122 (33% of residents), State House District 121 (32% of residents), and County Commissioner District 4, in the Greater Portland region.

In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris carried South Portland with 74.4% to 22.9% for Donald Trump. That was a Democratic margin of 51.5 points, against a Democratic margin of 6.9 points statewide. In the 2022 governor’s race, Janet Mills carried South Portland with 78.5% to 20.2% for Paul LePage. In the 2024 U.S. Senate race, Angus King (Unenrolled) carried South Portland with 63.8% to 18% for Demi Kouzounas. On the Partisan Electoral Alignment Index (Partisan EAI), it ranks as the 9th most Democratic of 504 towns.
